Welcome to the White Tower of Thessaloniki

Few landmarks tell a city’s story quite like the White Tower. Built by the Ottomans in the 15th century along Thessaloniki’s waterfront, it has served as a fortress, a prison, and, since 2008, a six-floor museum dedicated to the history of one of Greece’s most vibrant cities. Known in Greek as Lefkos Pyrgos, it remains the undisputed symbol of Thessaloniki, visible from almost every corner of the city and impossible to forget once you’ve stood at the top, looking out over the Thermaic Gulf. Our Agency Welcomes you.

Discover Thessaloniki’s Most Iconic Landmark

The White Tower of Thessaloniki has had many names over the centuries: the Lion’s Tower, the Tower of Blood, the Janissary Tower. Each one carries the weight of a different era. Today, the tower opens its doors to visitors from around the world, offering six floors of multimedia exhibitions that trace Thessaloniki’s 2,500-year history from its founding in 316 BC to the present day. At the very top, a panoramic observation deck rewards the climb with sweeping views of the city, the sea, and the mountains beyond.

Best Time to Visit the white tower

The tower is open daily throughout the year. For a quieter experience with more space to take in the exhibitions, early morning visits on weekdays work best, especially in July and August when the waterfront promenade gets busy. Sunset visits in summer, however, are something else entirely: the light over the Thermaic Gulf from the top of the tower is worth planning around.
